Dear Ms Stoneking:
I wanted to make a few comments on the concealed carry course, based on my perspective of being a high school teacher for the last 36 years. The group of adults was not a whole lot different from the high school students I work with. So, up front, I thought (from my perspective) you and your teachers did a tremendous job of presenting critical information to a group of people who had (I believe) widely varying degrees of competence with a firearm, and reasons for taking a class that ultimately ends up with a concealed carry permit. The manner in which the statutes were covered was as good as it can be done. Your teachers allowed for students to vent their ideas on the topic, then cut through the B.S. by restating what the documents actually say. This is as good an approach as you could ask for. The most dangerous thing that could happen would be for a student to leave that classroom believing that ‘their interpretation’ would be O.K. for an operating base when they start ‘packing’. As I sat and listened, in every case, the statutes were restated and the students deviations were corrected. As for the range time, I thought you and your team did a terrific job (and in some cases demonstrated great patience and restraint) working with a group of individuals with widely varying experience with a handgun. Because of the time you took to emphasize range safety in the classroom, I felt at home on the firing line, and safe enough to concentrate on the target in front of me. Well done.
